I have been a flight attendant for more than a decade. I’ve had the privilege of having notable foreign passengers like company owners, performers, celebrities and athletes to name a few. Hence, it is time to recall my most popular foreign passenger on a flight.
The most popular foreign passenger I had was someone whose music I listen too. I even support his signature shoes!
Everytime I work in business class, I take a gander on the passenger list so I can address them by their names as they enter the plane. And I was shocked as I saw the name… West, Kanye on the passenger manifest. No one was more surprised than I was! It was Yeezy himself!
Kanye West was my most popular foreign passenger
He came in before the doors closed. I welcomed him and started by offering a drink. He didn’t have any. And I ended the conversation by giving him my name just in case he would need anything.
He didn’t partake of any food during the main meal service. He just took off his shoes and covered himself with a blanket the whole time. But as the lights turned off, and as everyone was about to rest and sleep, that’s when he was awake. It was a long flight, from Los Angeles, California, USA to Manila, Philippines. He had his reading light on and was tinkering his Macbook. He seemed to be working for he had multiple windows on. Fashion photos of his apparel, some designs for rooms, and a lot of notes. Maybe lyrics to his next hit song.
Again, I offered him something to eat and it seems he wasn’t hungry. All he wanted was a glass of orange juice accompanied by a glass of vodka. When I saw him finish, I came over and offered a refill. I finally saw one of those elusive Kanye West smiles! He had two or three more refills before going to sleep. When we arrived in Manila, there were tons of security that was waiting for him. Surprisingly, he didn’t have any entourage with him.
If the passenger was not Kanye West, would it be a nice story to tell? Maybe not. Might not even be memorable. But did I treat him differently because he was a celebrity? No. When we are in the service industry, we treat all our customers as VIPs. And as Mr. West would put it, we would love all our customers like how Kanye loves Kanye.
