I somehow miss flying and yet, I somehow don’t miss flying

DO YOU MISS WORKING AS A FLIGHT ATTENDANT?

Because of the pandemic and the lockdown, majority of the flights have been cancelled. And as of now, though the industry is starting to schedule flights once again, I haven’t been taking flights since the lockdown started last March 2020 and it has already been over a year. And because of this, I was asked if I missed flying. My answer:

Yes and No.

Yes. I have been a flight attendant for more than a decade already and I really love what I do. The work itself and everything that comes in between. The people I get to meet, the colleagues that I have an opportunity to work with, the friends that I get to see, the places that I get to visit, the culture that I get to experience, among many other things. I mean, it would be a given to say yes and I think majority would understand and immediately get why I would miss it. It has been surreal to be able to have that job and to be a flight attendant is such a blessing.

With that being said, my answer is also a no. You’d think I would say such because of the difficulties that the job entail. I see some flight attendants talking about how they miss the troublesome customers, the demanding passengers, the medical and technical emergencies, the flight delays, etc, etc, etc. In short, they miss the things that somehow give the job a lot of challenges. And you might think I don’t miss it because of the said reasons. I don’t. I have a different perspective on why I don’t miss my job.

Being exceptional

It is because everytime I fly, I always treat it as my last flight. I always give my best whether I have a good or a burdensome day. So whether it may be a positive or an otherwise different experience, I always end my flight with no regrets and I know I have done almost everything that I can in terms of doing my job well. I won’t deny that there would be problematic days but my point being is, as of this moment, I do not look back and wish that I could have done better or should have valued my job more. Because I do. And I always will. Or at least try to. In general, I try to live my life with no regrets, work included. In everything that you do, treat every experience like it is your last. Make it memorable. Give it your all. Because you’ll never know when would be the next… Or if you’d be given an opportunity like such again.

As I have mentioned earlier, I am not flying. And that is somewhat okay. I understand the challenges that the industry is facing right now and a lot of people have to make sacrifices. That not all flight attendants will have an opportunity to work. For there are limited flights, a small number of passengers, the fear of the pandemic and a lot more reasons. But what I can do is wait… wait patiently until we fully take back the skies again. Look forward to the day where I can wear my wings and get back to work. Until that day comes, I will continuously miss and not miss my job. For I always am and will forever be grateful for it. And at the same time, praying to be able to regularly fly once again. And hopefully, it’s sooner than later.
