Let this be the beginning of your flight attendant story

Every flight attendant has a story. It may have started with a dream, a challenge, a goal, or they may have just stumbled on the path to becoming a cabin crew. Luck if you’d like to call it. Destiny to some. Let this be the beginning of your flight attendant story, and it starts today as you read this.

If you are an aspirant reading this, I am certain you have heard a lot of stories on how your friend, an acquaintance, a friend’s friend or any random person’s story. In spite of all the posted qualifications of airlines, they have been accepted by said companies even if they fall short of the bare minimum. Those who are an inch short of the height requirements, problem with their weight, those with scars, birthmarks, uneven set of teeth, problems with vision, failures in college, more so not being able to finish college, or those with a 2 year course diploma, etc., etc., etc.

These stories make aspirants feel one of two things:

  1. Hope – that if these aspirants got accepted and are now cabin crew, then they might be able to be given the same opportunities.
  2. Doubt – that these former aspirants who are now cabin crew make them question themselves more, lose confidence and make them feel that they are not enough.

But you should remember that they have their own story, and you should focus on yours. Never compare yourself to anyone else. Do you know difference between their story and your story?

They took a step. They moved forward. They applied.

Before doing such, they did at least one of three Ps:

  1. Prepare – Your physical characteristics, I call that genetic lottery. That is something that is mostly out of our control. But with everything else, we can enhance it. Make sure we always look presentable. Dress nicely and appropriately. Use clothes to our advantage. Wear something that will make you look taller, slimmer, more approachable, among others. Do not just focus on your look, prepare your introductions too, be informed about the company and have answers ready for frequently asked questions. Practice talking in front of the mirror and do some research while focusing on your verbals and non verbals.
  2. Perspective – Have that positivity. Why is it when people line up for a tv show, audition for a singing / acting / dance contest, join a go see or try out for a team, they mostly come out positive. Usually with the words; “I’ll try again.”, “Maybe its not yet my time.”, “Wait until i come back next time.” Even if the judge, director, or manager looked at you for less than 10 seconds and decided you don’t deserve the opportunity? Why still be positive? Same goes in applying for the airline. Some, after receiving rejections, come out bitter, angry and negative. And for the worse part, some already have these negative feelings even before their application per se. Have the proper mindset. Come in with a clear perspective of things. Exude positivity.
  3. Perfect Timing – I’m certain you have heard of some aspirants who passed their interview on the first try. So instead of luck, I’d like to call it perfect timing. But this doesn’t happen to everybody right? So while waiting for your time, keep on improving yourself. Keep on preparing. After all, just in case you don’t get your perfect timing to be a flight attendant, all that preparation will lead you to somewhere else, somewhere better. You may have just yet to realize it.

Always be hopeful and keep improving yourself

So do not let doubt creep in and always have hope. Keep on improving yourself and move forward. Read, interview, research and ask questions. Attend seminars, workshops or join groups that will enhance your skills. While waiting for that perfect timing, prepare and have a positive perspective on things. You wouldn’t want to waste that opportunity, right? Constant improvement wouldn’t hurt anyone anyway.

This may be the start of your flight attendant story. And it would be my privilege to be a part of it. So feel free so send me a message.
