Passenger fined $52500 for assaulting a flight attendant

Cabin crews or most commonly known as ‘Flight Attendants’ are the ones who are responsible to make the passengers feel comfortable and ensuring their safety in a long hour of flight. However, as some people perceived that being a flight attendant is an easy job – serving food in the flight or assisting the boarding of passengers; little did you know that their life is also at stake every day. In a flight, the cabin crews do not only perceive the threat of air crash or hi-jacking, but also the situation where an irate passenger transpires.

The truth about the abusive acts of irate passengers in-flight this pandemic

Recently this pandemic season in 2021, many flights on the United States eases as the cure for the COVID-19 has been rolling out in most of the communities. Yet, unexpectedly, the rate of violence and abuse to flight attendants has been rapidly increasing, and over 4, 941 reports about it. Oftentimes, the main reasons that the passengers have been acting rude in flight are because of the strict health protocols and the federal mask mandates. It is not easy for the cabin crews to correct the passengers who are not following the mandated protocol, yet, they are always taking risks to negotiate with the passengers patiently to obey.

Nonetheless, there are times that the heartfelt concern of the flight attendants wasn’t always repaid in a good way, rather they have always been assaulted off-guard.

The undeserved situation encountered by a good flight attendantThe new case of assault took place in the American Airlines passenger which was announced by the Justice Department. It has been confirmed that a flight attendant was punched in the face twice, which leads to a New York-to-Southern California flight to call for an emergency landing in Denver. The reason for the assault was reported by the CBS News transportation correspondent Errol Barnett that a flight attendant accidentally bumped the first-class passenger during Wednesday’s flight but since it is not an intentional act of the flight attendant, an apology came right away. However, later on, the passenger named Brian Hsu, 20, unhesitatingly stood in his seat to head to the galley and punched the cabin crew; which led to breaking bones in her face. Sadly, the passenger just returned to his seat as if he did nothing terrible

After what happened, the American CEO Doug Parker stated that “it was one of the worst acts of unruly behavior” that he has seen, and this thing must be stopped – by ruling an aggressive criminal prosecution. Fortunately, the rude passenger has been charged with assault and interference (punishment of 20 years in prison and $250,000 fine) with a cabin crew within the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States.

Knowing this piece of news breaks our hearts and leaves an empathy to the victim – our very own flight attendant. We know that flight attendant are known for their dedication and passion when it comes to carrying their responsibilities and values learned in their immense training just to ensure the safety of all their passengers. That’s why this situation must not happen again because no cabin crews deserve to be treated with this unruly behavior. Hence, there must be a strict rule to be implemented, that the flight attendants are the authority inside the aircraft so that the passengers will abide.

No one deserves to experience this situation; not our current flight attendants, not even you.
