Flight attendant opens street food business after losing job

She was one of those thousands of flight attendants who were retrenched due to the effects of this pandemic. While this experience can really be disheartening, for flight attendant Axlle Justine K. Jakosalem, there was simply no choice but to push forward. She become one of those hundreds of flight attendants who became entrepreneurs, so yes, she opened up her own business too.

After Axlle returned to her hometown in Cebu, she used her “last pay” to open up @eightfixandchill, a Cebuano streetfood restaurant that specialises in serving one of the most famous eclectic streetfood in my hometown, “Tuslob Buwa” or “ dip in pig brains” business.

Hmmmm, interesting indeed.

Axlle is very much hands-on with her business. She takes orders, she talks with the customers, she cooks, and she oversees the operations of her restaurant. She partnered with her best friends for this.

We are unsure of how this goes but with the pictures that were sent in, this is something worth trying indeed. According to Axlle “we are also showcasing our best-selling Dynamite (Jalapeño bomb) , stuffed egg, siomai , and “Proven” (fried chicken gut).”

Being a flight attendant, Axlle is very much aware that safety is paramount and even in restaurants, the safety of their customers should be taken into great consideration. “We ensure a safe and well maintained establishment by implementing social distancing, wearing of mask and faceshield, & temperature checks upon dining,” said Axlle.

This is why it is very important to always have an “emergency fund” or to “save for the rainy days.” Who would ever expect that a pandemic with such magnitude may happen in this lifetime, especially when the local aviation had been on the rise. “It’s really important to analyse and study where you put your money in, especially during this time of the pandemic. Covid-19 was a surprise to us all, we didn’t expect it to last this long.. imagine eight long months and counting. In a blink of an eye, millions of people lost their jobs. In light of this year’s pandemic and calamities, we learn to innovate and use our resources to make ends meet,” Axlle shares.

While losing a dream job due to something beyond our control, it is always best to always keep pushing forward and to explore what else we can do. We can always earn our “wings” back, but the question is when, especially when a crisis is still ongoing.

For this flight attendant however, “we should take adversity into your advantage. We may have lost our dream job but that doesn’t limit us to explore our capabilities. Will we be blocked by obstacles, or will we advance through and over them?. In the end, everything has its purpose, and it’s never too late to start. Trust in yourself and in God.”

As what they say, “diskarte hindi arte.”
