What you need to know before you say “Just A Flight Attendant”

With the advent of new technology, saying unwanted things to someone made easier than the traditional times. In just one click on the comment section with different social media platforms, it can already change someone’s life – it’s either an encouragement or a troublesome message. Countless research studies have shown that some professions have experienced and continuously dealing with belittlement over their job, and one of those professions is becoming a Flight Attendant.

Recently on the pandemic season, there are Cabin Crews who have experienced insults and harassment while in flight and received rude comments from one of their customers who blatantly said that “You’re just a Flight Attendant”.

It is devastating to hear this kind of news, knowing the duties, responsibilities, and difficult training that a Flight Attendant has dealt with before gaining their wings. But, are we are aware of these? Most of the time, people are speaking unwanted things because they are not fully aware of the hardships that a person has experienced. It’s true, isn’t it?

Now, let us know some of the situations that a Flight Attendant must take courageously before flying.

Besides the long period of waiting in line just to be qualified for training, and taking pieces of training about the duties of a Flight Attendant, and learning technical terms about the aircraft, the Cabin Crews are also well-trained with other necessary things.

Flight attendants are trained to fight fires while 35,000 feet in the air, perform CPR, and do first aid-basic up to inserting an IV. They also know how to identify different weapons and guns, and to identify bombs while risking their lives to get that threat to a location on the aircraft that will somehow cause the least damage, and not risking the lives of its passengers.

What you need to know before you say “Just A Flight Attendant”

They are not ‘just the Flight Attendant that some people perceived them to be, they are well-aware of the basic survival skills for water and land; know how to disarm people holding a gun, and to prepare an airplane for an emergency landing so that every individual on board will have a chance to survive and most importantly how to evacuate people in under 60 seconds. Amazing isn’t it? But wait, there’s more!

Committed to getting you out of an emergency,

While some of us already complain to smile at our colleagues, flight attendants have to hold their smiles while dealing with people from many different nationalities, cultures, behaviors, and people who are rude. Keep in mind that the flight attendants have received excellent training for all of these, and every year they have to go through ‘refresher training’ and learn new skills to be equipped to provide safety to their passengers.

With that having said, we hope that the moment we see some people who belittle the Flight Attendants we’ll be able to educate them that these crews are trained and committed to getting you out of an emergency, save us from any threats, perform CPR if we need it – and the easiest part of their job is to provide us a portion of delicious food and drinks. This also pertains to you, aspiring Cabin Crews.

May we never forget to practice kindness and a portion of grace to all the people around us, and not discourage them on what they’re doing because we never know what they have to face just to get there.
