Why flight attendants wear scarf?

Why flight attendants wear scarf?

There’s something about the aura that the flight attendants bring to the airport. With their uniforms and scarf wrapped on their neck gives the perfect definition of class and elegance together in one piece.

When you see flight attendants, mostly we focus on how do these people bring justice to the outfit 35,000 feet? Never in a simple conversation someone picked an interest on asking about the scarf?

What’s with the scarf in their necks anyway?

Although scarves are already worn by men and women in the airways during 60’s, it never goes out of style. Instead, it grows into one of the icons and of the job.

It is believed that in this year, carriers steered through new designs of uniform regulations encouraging shorter skirts for greater self-expression followed by the anti-discrimination decision in Diaz v. Pan American World Airways Inc. of male flight attendants in their inevitable neckties.

With the silk scarf, this brings them unity.  Not only it gives you a classic style vibe but it also brings out a youthful look.

Aside from being the “cherry-on-top” gesture of the silk scarf, it does not only limit its use for uplifting the fashion look of the flight attendants but it’s also used on different things depending on the situation:

  1. Act as a Bandage

The primary duty of the flight attendant is to address the security of the passengers, as well as, their needs.  For someone who is severely injured on the plane, the silk scarf can be used as bandage temporarily.

  1. It brings harmony to the uniform

The flight attendants are recognized for having a scarf on their necks since the 60’s. Without it would make them feel naked since they’re exposing their necks. The purpose of tying the silk scarf is to make the overall outfit harmonious. Honestly, they blend together perfectly. Not too shiny, not too much; just right.

  1. As an etiquette for showing respect

Wearing silk scarves in public places is a matter of etiquette. As a public service staff on the plane, scarves are worn to show respect for the passengers, as well as, to bring them a sense of intimacy. Bright colored silk scarves will also help your passengers to feel relaxed and secured.  Bold colors symbolize strength. As a flight attendant, strength is something to pack and to have with you in the sky.

  1. It covers the odd color parts of the neck.

Color difference between the neck and the makeup face is a big deal for the flight attendants since they have to be present for the people on board.  Wearing a silk scarf can avoid the embarrassment of the color difference from the face to the neck.

  1. It reflects the airline’s image.

As the flight attendant wears the scarf, he/she is also representing the image of the airline from the way they are dressed.  Uniforms and scarves can make the whole person look very harmonious and beautiful. It is also important to know that you’re carrying the badge of the airline company so be responsible with your actions as well.

The scarf has withstood the test of time.  Despite the trend, it still stands out amongst the other accessories. It has become resilient just like the flight attendants on board who continously shed confidence in the sky. They say fashion is timeless. Just like the scarves; a very simple piece of silk cloth but when both combined, it adds volume to the whole outfit. How these women show up their outfit is what makes them exceptional. This is why there are a lot of dreamers out there who continuously look up to them as a model of simplicity and elegance in one.
